The attached study shows statistical significance correlating personality traits and gifted adults consistent with the “disharmony hypothesis” which states that gifted individuals may face unique social challenges and have specific emotional needs which may increase psychological vulnerabilities. Specifically, “high levels of narcissism (among others), might lead to interpret the personality characteristics of gifted adults in the light of the Dark Triad of personality (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). However, they suggest that these traits, combined with the higher levels of introversion, could be better understood as a reaction of lack of security and trust in others rather than an actual manipulative and exploitative attitude.” I am by no means a genius but I have been clinically tested as gifted as well as scoring high on narcissism (traits not NPD), emotional intelligence, and Machiavellianism. I have been referred to as insensitive and arrogant, but I in no way relate to abusing others or lacking empathy. Being that a typical characteristic of narcissists is an inability to recognize themselves as such-I set out to explore and adjust traits that present as narcissistic. I was met with mostly kind feedback but an overall consensus of lost cause. I reject that. Clinical NPD is extremely rare although Narcissistic traits are present in the majority of us. Adaptive narcissism is a proven phenomenon among high stress professions such as nursing and firefighters, and narcissism is high among corporate leadership (Steve Jobs, John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison). I do not put myself among the aforementioned successes, but it’s important to note that not all narcissists are the legends of evil as portrayed and exist.
