“I’ve known a great many clever men. I’ve outlived them all. You know why? I ignored them“- Olenna Tyrell, Game of Thrones
There have been so many brilliant and clever philosophers throughout the centuries.
They spent so much time thinking about the nature of reality, about science, and about ethics.
But why were so many of them miserable?
How could they spend all their time thinking deeply and still couldn’t figure out how to be happy?
It’s because they were so caught up in the mind they forgot that it was only a tool.
When we live by the intellect, we die by the intellect.
If you’re a naturally smart person, it’s like having a faster horse. It’s certainly a blessing, but you have an easier chance of getting hurt if you can’t control it.
How many stories has the voice in your mind told you, to the point that it drove you mad, only to find out that none of it was true?
Imagine if that voice was your friend or a therapist — you’d be so furious you’d leave them on the spot.
So just as a reminder to myself and everyone else:
Don’t take all of your thoughts seriously.
They’re just thoughts.
Just because I can imagine myself riding on a flying unicorn, that doesn’t make it real.
Just because your mind scared you into thinking someone feels a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s real.
Because if you don’t ignore these thoughts, you’re in for a lot of suffering.
