I am Chinese Singaporean. Born and bred here. You ask me if I wanted to be governed by mainland china, I will counterpropose that I am already being governed like China here in Singapore. More precisely, the Chinese economic and political reforms are influenced in a large part by Singapore. For example, one party rule for 54 years (no term limit), a meritocratic system of selecting officials and public officers, a government system that plans for 30 or more years into the future, focus on self determination, strong presence of government linked companies, restriction on media freedom and public protest, strong military, openness to foreign investments and a “fine” culture. In fact, the technological transfer that got China into trouble, we have a less contentious approach of requiring companies to train locals in the latest technologies. There are certainly bits that are different, such as our british inherited judiciary system, open election, use of english, open economy, respect for IP, our focus on public housing and a conservative prudent budget. So, am I proud of mainland China? I would say yes and thank you for showing that the Singapore model may have some relevance even for a huge country like China.
Edit: Shane has contributed a few points relating to the focus on public housing and fiscal prudence. It is indeed not as clear cut as I made it out to be. It looks like we have more in common on these two fronts than I originally imagined.
